2010-01-14 - LONDON ENERGY BROKERS’ ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES OTC CARBON VOLUMES GROWTH OF 49% TO OVER 2.5 BILLION TONNES IN 2009

London Energy Brokers’ Association (“LEBA”), which represents the FSA regulated wholesale market brokers in the OTC and exchange traded UK and liberalised European energy markets, today announces that in 2009, LEBA OTC Carbon volumes grew by 49% compared to the same period last year. A total of 2,580,173,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) were transacted in the year, compared to 1,730,568,758 tonnes in 2008.

In the EU Emissions Allowance market (EUA), a total of 2,089,893,434 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) were transacted in the year, compared to 1,520,380,758 tonnes in the same period last year, amounting to an increase of 37%.

In the secondary Certified Emission Reduction (CER) market, LEBA OTC Carbon trade accounted for an even greater increase over the previous year. Total CER volumes traded in the OTC market for the twelve months amounted to 490,280,066 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), representing an increase of 133% over the previous year.

Commenting on the market, Alex McDonald, Chief Executive, LEBA, said: “The growth in liquidity and volumes across the board continues to show the huge potential of the OTC carbon markets and the unique and invaluable role that the brokers provide in this market.”
