2007-07-12 - Market Wide Exercise 2006 Pandemic: lessons learned

Date: Thursday, 19 July 2007

In Oct/Nov 2006, the tripartite (FSA, HM Treasury and Bank of England) led a 6-week market-wide exercise that simulated the first wave of pandemic influenza. The exercise provided the 70 participating organisations with an unparalleled opportunity to test how well their business continuity plans would stand up to a period of prolonged disruption.

The Exercise underlined the major challenges that would face the financial sector in maintaining as far as possible, a stable operational environment during an extended period of interruption to business. In particular, it highlighted the challenges to firms\\\' HR Policies during a period of high absenteeism e.g., what would you do if your staff refuse to come to work or were at home caring for others? And, the risks of disruption to key dependencies such as power, transport and telecoms, could your staff work from home? Would trains be running? It also challenged firm\\\'s existing response plans, for example for extended home working.

Through this seminar, we are aiming to share main lessons learned from the exercise with firms which were not able to participate and provide them with a forum for discussing the main implications for their own pandemic planning.

Participants will hear from health professionals the latest information on the risk of a flu pandemic and will also have the chance to ask questions of the wide range of experts from across the financial and non financial sectors who helped to plan and deliver this unique exercise. Ahead of the seminar you may wish to read the full report on the exercise which is available on the financial authorities\\\' joint website: www.fsc.gov.uk. The seminar will also provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the FSA\\\'s \\\'self help toolkit\\\' which enables firms to assess and enhance the effectiveness of their business continuity plans.
